The pilot was hilarious. Looking forward to more.
Outland is a new comedy series that just premiered on Australia’s ABC 1. It follows the lives of members of a sci-fi fan club, all of whom are gay (or, as they prefer, “science fiction enthusiast homosexualists”). One of them dressed as a Dalek at one point!
It is hard to say where the show will head, if it will veer into the territory of Too Much Camp and broad caricatures, although it seems like not everyone on the show is played as such. However, when the series pre-screened to attendees of last year’s Seattle’s Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, it won an audience award. And I just can’t think of any comparable comedy series, can you?
So, while the chances of us watching it stateside in any sort of legitimate way are very unlikely, I still can’t help but be excited about the fact that the show exists. Only time (and actual viewing, somehow) will tell.
